Bathukamma Festival

Bathukamma - Why Do We Celebrate It?

Bathukamma is a vibrant and unique floral festival celebrated predominantly in the Telangana region of India. It is a festival that honors Goddess Gauri (a form of Parvati) and is deeply rooted in Telugu culture, especially among women.

Bathukamma” means "Mother Goddess, come alive" (from "Bathuku" = life, and "Amma" = mother). It symbolizes the celebration of life, nature, and womanhood, and marks the beauty of seasonal change during the onset of autumn.

It is usually celebrated during Navaratri (September–October), culminating on the ninth day called Saddula Bathukamma, just before Dussehra (Dasara).

🏵️ Cultural & Historical Significance

1. Mythological Belief

  • According to legend, King Dharmangada and Queen Satyavati of the Chola dynasty, after losing many children, prayed to Goddess Lakshmi.
  • The Goddess blessed them with a daughter, who survived — hence named Bathukamma, meaning “come alive.”
  • She is believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi/Gauri, born to bless the people.

2. Feminine Power & Earth Worship

  • Bathukamma celebrates Shakti — the feminine energy — and the natural bounty of the earth.
  • Flowers used in Bathukamma are medicinal and seasonal, reflecting a deep connection with nature and health.

🌼 How It’s Celebrated

  • Preparation of Bathukamma
    • Women arrange a beautiful conical stack of seasonal flowers, mainly Gunuka, Tangedu, Banthi, Lotus, and Chamanti, layered in circular rows.
    • A symbolic idol of Goddess Gauri (made from turmeric paste) is placed on top.
  • Ritual Gathering & Singing
    • Women dress in traditional attire and gather in circles around the Bathukamma.
    • They sing folk songs, dance rhythmically, and move in graceful circular patterns.
  • Immersion (Nimajjanam)
    • On the final day, Bathukammas are carried to nearby water bodies (lakes, ponds), and gently immersed, symbolizing a return to nature and the cycle of life.
